Resources supporting informed decision making in clinical supervisionResources
ACSA will make some of our resources available here to all professionals from time to time. You could also take a look at the various resources we have tucked away under this menu section.
ACSA Critique of NMBA, Draft Model of Supervision for Practising Private Midwives (PPMs) 2016
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) drafted the above policy and asked for feedback, although ACSA was not invited. However, the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) asked for our opinion, which we gladly gave. ACSA then contacted NMBA to formally provide feedback to them, although they did not respond to us. Given how important both such developments are by the NMBA and ACSA’s trepidation in mandating clinical supervision provisions, we sent our feedback to NMBA, regardless.
The anxiety is that clinical supervision substitutes for regulatory supervision within not only a model for PPMs, but for all other professions. ACSA certainly encourages PPMs and all midwives to engage in their own clinical supervision, but to do so within the spirit of voluntary choice and reciprocal contractual obligations and not from a regulatory mandate under any guise.
ACSA has still not heard back from NMBA, and now we publish our critique for professionals and the public to form their own conclusions.

ACSA Feedback to HETI, The Clinical Supervision Competency Matrices 2016
ACSA expressed concerns on the generalisations and poorly enunciated outcomes for clinical supervision in a request for feedback on the draft Clinical Supervision Competency Matrices: Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy (July 2016) developed by NSW Health and the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI). Again, we are making our response publicly available here.

ACSA Definitions Paper on Clinical Supervision 2014
ACSA acknowledges the ongoing confusion on the term, clinical supervision, how it is used, and to what it refers. We have developed a definitions paper to clarify the practice of clinical supervision. We hope it helps practitioners to understand it better. Feel free to download the paper here.
